The Relationship of Parents¡¯ Child-Rearing Attitudes perceived by Elementary School Students with Their Self-Esteem

Abstract
Purpose: This study was to investigate the Relationship of Parents¡¯ Child-Rearing Attitudes perceived by Elementary School Students with Their Self-Esteem.

Method: The data collected from June-July 2006 were put to Correlation analysis and Regression analysis by SPSSWIN 12.0.

Results: 1) As for the correlation between parents¡¯ child-rearing attitude perceived by elementary school students, and their self-esteem, autonomy-control of the sub-category of parents¡¯ child-rearing attitude showed a positive correlation with children¡¯s self-esteem (r=.176, p<.05).2) As for the effect of parents¡¯ child-rearing attitude perceived by elementary school students on their self-esteem, autonomy-control of the sub-category of parents¡¯ child-rearing attitude showed a positive effect on children¡¯s self-esteem (¥â=.176, p<.05). Thus, it was clear that the higher autonomy-control was, the higher children¡¯s self-esteem was. Also, it was learned that achievement-non-achievement had a statistically significant effect on children¡¯s self-esteem (¥â=.734, p<.05).

Conclusion: parents¡¯ child-rearing attitude that has great effects on their children, autonomy-oriented and achievement-oriented attitude should be emphasized. Thus, to help children foster autonomy-oriented and achievement-oriented attitude, parents should have the child-rearing attitude to give as much autonomy as possible to their children with regard to observation of rules, and to guide them to set up achievable goals and accomplish achievement levels.
